Tshechus : A colorful experience
Tshechus which literally translates as the tenth day is a unique Bhutanese festival celebrated on the 10th day of the 10th month in the lunar calendar. As these festivals follow the lunar calendar, the exact date of the festival varies from year to year in the Roman calendar. The tshechus depict the prominent happenings in the life of the great Buddhist saint Guru Rimpoche. Thus, it is a way of paying reverence to him all the while passing on the merit to the onlookers. The tshechus despite having the similarity in paying homage to the Guru, differs from region to region with respect to the worship of the local deities.
This festival gathers in huge crowds that includes local dressed in their best attires along with tourists who makes the trip solely for the chance of witnessing the festival. For the locals, it is a blessing ceremony and a festive occasion that offers a chance to be together with one’s family and during the festival families dining together is a common sight.
